Working For A Cruise Line Concessionaire

What you need to know about working for a cruise line concessionaire.

cruiseshipjobsdirectory.com

Cruise Concessionaire Directory

A cruise line concessionaire is simply a third party vendor that sells services or merchandise onboard a cruise ship. Concessionaires are independent companies that hire and train employees to work onboard the cruise ships that they partner with.  In fact, you would be working for the concessionaire and not the cruise line.  For some types of positions, the only way to get hired is to apply through the concessionaire.

Sixth Star hires for the following entertainment or enrichment staff positions: Arts & Crafts Instructors, Ballroom Dance Instructors, Bridge Directors, Caricature Artists, Cruise Entertainment Staff, Dancer-Production Teams, Face Painters, Guest Speakers, Musicians, Singer-Production Teams, Technical Staff, Youth Coordinators and others.

About Being "Enrichment Staff" - Whether you have been booked on a cruise as a guest speaker, bridge director, arts & crafts director, ballroom dance instructor, clergy or other short-term position, you fall under the category of "Enrichment Staff."  Enrichment Staff are not employees of Sixth Star, nor the cruise line, and are not considered crew members. While Enrichment Staff are included on the passenger manifest and enjoy full passenger status, they are not "passengers," as passengers have to pay full price for their cruise.  So, as Enrichment Staff, you are probably wondering, "Where do I fit in?" Good question! Enrichment Staff are in a bit of a gray area. They are not crew, but not passengers. That said; this gray area is one of the best travel deals afloat. In exchange for sharing your special talent several times throughout the cruise, you enjoy a cruise for two and all the food, entertainment and activities that passengers have to pay for. However, please note that due to this unique role, it is important that full-fare passengers always come first around the ship. For more information, visit www.sixthstar.com

Medical

Ship Physician
All modern cruise ships have an infirmary and at least one doctor and nurse. Larger cruise ships may carry two doctors and several nurses. There are two types of shipboard doctors. Those who work year round as a career ship physician with a salary and vacation time. Then there are those who work in exchange for a free cruise.

There are no set standards for shipboard doctors, but in our research we have noticed common minimum requirements for shipboard physicians.

They are as follows:

  • Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support.

  • Current valid medical license, international or American.

  • Ability to converse in English.

  • Board certification, similar international certification or equivalent experience in Emergency Medicine, Family Practice, Internal Medicine or General Practice plus emergency or critical care experience.

  • Clinical experience including minor surgical skills.

  • Medical degree from a recognized college or university.

  • Ability to diagnose and treat a broad range of medical conditions.

  • Ability to immobilize simple fractures.

Ship Nurse
There are nurses that work onboard a ship as a full-time career and those who do so in exchange for free cruising. As with physicians, there are no set standards for shipboard nurses, but the minimum requirements are as follows:

  • Registered Nurse, licensed in Canada or the USA.

  • Fluent in English.

  • Have clinical experience in Emergency Medicine and the Intensive Care Unit, Coronary Care Unit or Post-Anesthetic Recovery.

  • Current certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
